You've got to love this quote from the Apache mod_rewrite doc:

"Despite the tons of examples and docs, mod_rewrite is voodoo. Damned cool voodoo, but still voodoo. ''

And it's totally true. mod_rewrite is damned cool, but it can make your head hurt. A lot.
